I have just bought a portable hardrive to store my pictures on when going abroad next week and it says in the instructions that it must be treated as a laptop and not put through the x-ray scanners at the airport - so HOW and where should I pack this - it is very small and will fit in my pocket and then i could transfer to hand luggage afterwards?
Also is it ok for the cameras (Canon 40D) and lenses to go through the x-ray machine?
What does everyone else do please?
Best Wishes Penny
laptops go through the scanner ok.

there is no way you can put anything on a plane without it going through an xray machine nowadays, even hold bags tend to behind the scenes, i have put laptops and ext hard drives through xray with no issues whatsoever ! cameras even film are fine also !
