Just got a 450D and would be grateful for any suggested setting for use with a Canon 400mm ,5.6 lens

Just the same as mine, but waiting 400 should have it next 7 days.

Av AI servo f8 ISO 400 spot focus spot metering try for 1000/1 or over speed
burst frame adjust White balance as required

I am a beginner so wait for the experts.............

Cant wait for my 400

BTW shoot raw neutral

Geoff, For hand holding this lens I would suggest the following as a general setting:

Av Mode: Shoot wide open at f5.6
Metering: Partial
ISO: use 400 as standard (but crank up to ISO 800 if poor light)
Centre focus point only
AI Servo (even for perched birds - they may move!)
High Burst mode
Auto Wide balance

I always shoot in raw but if you are not comfortable with this at the moment then use best quality jpeg.

The most important thing to remember with this lens is to keep the shutter speed up (esp if hand holding). You should be looking for at least 1/640 but faster if you can. Once you sort out your long lens holding technique you may find you can hand hold down to 1/500 and still get sharp shots.
