I was in a hide at Strumpshaw Fen on Saturday when a man came in carrying a large Canon camera (5D or 1D size – I don't know much about Canons) with a 400 f4 DO IS USM lens attached (I asked him.)
He put the camera on the shelf and as he sat down there was a rumbling noise and the camera and lens rolled off the shelf, fell onto the floor and bounced a couple of times. I was shocked and expected the man to react with horror at seeing £5000+ of equipment being destroyed but he seemed completely unphased, saying "It'll be all right." He picked it up, took a photo and said "Yes, it's fine." I asked him if he often did it but he said it hadn't happened before.
So there you have it: professional quality Canon equipment is indestructible!

Perhaps his kit did survive, but as a long time Canon user and owner, I can assure you that not all damage is immediately obvious. He may have damaged the fine tolerances in the lens USM motor and this may need fixing.
(I have a 5D and whilst slightly larger, it's close to the 30D in overall size. OTOH the 1D range are significantly larger and heavier than the others.)
