Image stabilisation when using a tripod

Both my Canon and Sony DV cameras don't perform properly with the IS switched on when mounted on a tripod. Left 'static' the picture wanders and when using manual modes the handbook recommends turning the feature off.

I was wondering if there are any justifications for doing the same when using lenses (especially longer reach) with a DSLR?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Thomas,
When using a tripod it is counter productive to leave the stabiliser switched on. The stabiliser will try to function but cannot because of the camera being held steady by the tripod.

Doesn't the IS stop any camera shake though (when you depress the shutter for example)?
