HELP! New 40d/500mm lens - - no photos

I received my new eqpt today and excitely got the camera setup, quickly read the manual on operating the 40d, put the lens on the Sidekick, attempted to photograph some backyard birds, and no pictures. Just a black display and downloads! I formatted the card that was previously used in my Nikon and the actuations write to the card fine but it is like the sensor is dead. No error messages - nothing. Of course the lens is new also, but it communicates with the 40d, focuses, and the IS operates.

Unfortunately, I have no other Canon cameras or lens, so I cannot cross check the new eqpt.

Am I doing something wrong here or is something defective?

Thanks - John

Hi John,

I have the same setup and had a similar problem with my first 40D, The mirror wasn't moving out of the way when I took a shot, so I went back to the store & they gave me a refund.

Then I went to a different store & bought another one, I did this so it would be from a different batch & this latest one works perfect.

Take a picture with the lens removed to see if it's the same problem.

Thanks Paul! I did check the mirror function and it seemed to work. So I took both the camera and lens to a camera store and tried another lens on my body and another body on the 500mm. My body was defective so I bought another 40d at that store and will ship the defective body back. I figured that a pro grade lens should have actually had some quality inspection performed on it, which was the case. It is sad to think that a camera like the 40d makes it through inspection and doesn't work at all - - whatever.
