Hiya,
Well been to Devon on hols and struggling with my 20D and BIF in Al Servo (spray and Pray) mode. My daughters 400D is much better.
That got me thinking of upgrading and as I can't afford a Mk3 obvious possibilities are used 1D mk2/N and newly announced 40D.
Has anyone any experience of using 40D in Al Servo mode for BIF?
The 1D mk2 AF is probably the best around but how good is the 40D, is it significantly better than the20D.
Many thanks for any comments
Cheers
Rob
Early reports suggest it isn't the best, Rob - possibly not as good as the 20D/30D - see http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/r...essage=24847288
I haven't tried to do much with BIFs myself yet, but - as suggested in one of the posts in the above thread - I have noticed that the higher sensitivity of the AF means that it can sometimes get "distracted" from the subject you're focusing on unless you're careful about positioning the AF point. The 20D/30D are perhaps more forgiving.
That said, AF is faster than on the 20D/30D so I suspect that practice will help.
The lens is also important here, of course, as is the size and speed of bird - I managed quite nicely yesterday with gulls and cormorants.
I can say though that when you do get focus on the bird (and it's certainly doable), those 6.5 fps make things a lot easier!
Keith,
Thanks for that link - doesn't look too promising though.
Guess I will keep looking for a used mk2/N as AF performance is supposidely stellar, and any goofs will probably be down to me!!
Thanks again for this
Cheers
